Back Pain

Woke up yesterday in terrible pain, God knows what I've done, but my back is killing me! I can't think of a time I've strained myself picking anything up last week, and I have no idea what could've brought it on at all :( It still hurts like crazy today, hardly slept a wink :( Couldn't sleep on my back at all, only seems to stop hurting when I'm either on my side or propped up on 4 pillows lol.

The clocks went forward last night, so lost an hour sleep, which I probably wouldn't've noticed anyway. *sigh*

Had to go out yesterday to Crawley to get a present and a card for Mother's Day which is today!

I got my mum a book on astronomy called Sky Watching, and Dan got her a 3-piece astronomy pack with a star chart, mini-guide and a planisphere. So now when my mum is in Portugal she can tell what stars she's looking at through her telescope (that she got for her 50th birthday). She was very pleased with both gifts :)

*yawn*

Another long week over. Hooray!

Em and I had a good talk last night, about how I've spent so much money on her, and how she feels like should should repay me but can't. I have never expected to be repaid, and never wanted to be either. I spend money on Em because she deserves being treated well, and I know it hasn't been easy for her. I know it's hard... one minute being treated like shit, the next being treated like a queen. Em is an amazing young woman, and I love her to bits! :) The bestest friend you could ever wish for :)

Iraq

This has been around a while now, but it's still funny:

Sing to the tune of "If You're Happy And You Know It, Clap Your Hands"

If you cannot find Osama, bomb Iraq.
If the markets are a drama, bomb Iraq.
If the terrorists are frisky,
Pakistan is looking shifty,
North Korea is too risky,
Bomb Iraq.

If we have no allies with us, bomb Iraq.
If we think someone has dissed us, bomb Iraq.
So to hell with the inspections,
Let's look tough for the elections,
Close your mind and take directions,
Bomb Iraq.

It's "pre-emptive non-aggression", bomb Iraq.
Let's prevent this mass destruction, bomb Iraq.
They've got weapons we can't see,
And that's good enough for me
'Cos it's all the proof I need
Bomb Iraq.

If you never were elected, bomb Iraq.
If your mood is quite dejected, bomb Iraq.
If you think Saddam's gone mad,
With the weapons that he had,
(And he tried to kill your dad),
Bomb Iraq.

If your corporate fraud is growin', bomb Iraq.
If your ties to it are showin', bomb Iraq.
If your politics are sleazy,
And hiding that ain't easy,
And your manhood's getting queasy,
Bomb Iraq.

Fall in line and follow orders, bomb Iraq.
For our might knows not our borders, bomb Iraq.
Disagree? We'll call it treason,
Let's make war not love this season,
Even if we have no reason,
Bomb Iraq.

MCP

I got my MCP welcome kit yesterday, containing my certificate, label pin and membership card :D It was lucky it did actually get to me, there were 3 errors in my address! LOL.

Last night I tried to log onto the MCP secured site, but they required a password given in a welcome email... WHAT EMAIL?? I tried using the "Forgot details" button, and entered the details I assumed should work, but of course they didn't.

So today I had to ring up Microsoft and the guy I spoke to helped me through the sign-up process, and eventually I got logged in ok. Now I have access to the logos, and some other information about my qualification.

I have to work out where on my website I can place the logo now, my index page is a bit short of space. I was thinking about moving the Guestbook link over to one of the sides under the other links... but then what goes on the other side? Maybe a link to www.dalnetsingles.net? Then I could fit the MCP logo in where the guestbook image is now. I'll probably fiddle around with it tonight, if I remember (and can be arsed!)

War Update

Ugh, bloody Americans. They shot down one of our fighters with a fucking Patriot! Are they completely incompetent? Can they not tell the difference between one of our planes and a scud missile?

So far we have lost more men through friendly fire and accidents than any other side in conflict. It's pathetic really.

Makes you so mad.

In other news, my parents and I went up to the Purley Way in Croydon looking for a new stand to put the VCR, Sky DigiBox, Plasma screen tuner, Sony cinema sound system and DVD player on. It's turning out to be an impossible task.

There is so much bloody tat out there. We'll probably end up having to build one to spec, as nothing even comes close to what we're after. We went to four stores, nothing once caught my eye. All crap. *sigh*

TGIF!

Woo, it's Friday! It's the weekend baby!!

Em went to take her G2 driving test today, I hope she's passed. She should do, she is a fantastic driver. I felt so safe with her when I was there for two weeks :) I know Em was really nervous but I did my best to boost her confidence in her own abilities. :) GOOD LUCK HUN!!

My brother should be coming home from Uni tomorrow, I haven't seen him since the end of January. It'll be nice to see him again, maybe we can get some LAN games going :) It's so boring playing computer games by yourself!

Watching the footage on the news about the war... it's quite staggering. The amount of explosions and flashes of light knocking out the cameras for a second in the dark. Pretty amazing. I'm going to try to keep as up to date as possible with this war after missing almost all of the Gulf War back in '91.

Being in boarding school back then made it very hard to keep up with anything going on in the outside world. We had hardly any access to TV, although we did get newspapers - but everything was a day out of date by then! What about the internet? What internet? There was no world wide web back then... well there was, but it only had a handful of sites considering TBL had only invented it in 1989-1990!

Before the bombing started, I was against the war - not serious enough about it to protest against it... but I felt that giving the Iraqis time to disarm would probably have been the best route to take. But now the war is started, I am behind my country. I am hoping that British losses will not be too great... we lost 8 Royal Marines today, which was a bit of a shock. They weren't even in combat at the time... which is the worst bit. Like Klingons, they should've died fighting with honour, but they died in a helicopter crash. Doesn't seem right somehow :/

My thoughts are with the Iraqi civilians right now. With the pounding that Baghdad is getting tonight, there's bound to be casualties. I hope they aren't too great, I have absolutely nothing against the Iraqi people. They are an opressed nation, and deserve freedom. They don't deserve to die in crossfire or by American bombs.

After all that, I think we deserve some humour, so here is a song: Let's Bomb Iraq.

Busy Busy

Today was a bit manic, loads of things to do. Worked on the Hyde Consulting, and CH International websites a bit - had to add a new member (Italy) to CHI, haven't done that in so long I had forgotten how many pages needed updating! LOL.

Steve from Globalink turned up today to finish setting up the new video conferencing equipment we're trialling. It's a big camera unit that sits on top of a TV, plugged into an ISDN line. I had to help him carry a massive Sony TV upstairs into the boardroom... and in the process took a big chunk out of the skin on my thumb on the metal door frame... OUCH.

That really hurt, and it bled a bit. Got myself a plaster from the first aid kit and was right as rain :) Hurt a bit more during the day as I tried to bend my thumb to hold onto things, but not too much... it sucks hurting your thumb, you forget how reliant on them you are.

Had some other little bits and pieces to do, nothing really exciting though.

Got home... had dinner, and put some boxes away in the loft that were hanging around the hallway and landing. While I was up there I tidied some of the junk over the top of my parents' bedroom up, so there's a little bit more room there now... everything's not so spread around. :)

That's my good deed for the day.

**** **** **** ****

I am a very angry ducky right now. I drove all the way to Indigo for my exam today, it's a 55 mile journey... and the fucking place went bankrupt on Monday! Did anyone bother to tell me? No. I had to go all the way there, discover that all the lights were turned off and all the doors locked, except for David Glover's office, where he was and he gave me the number of their liquidator.

Fuck sake.

I was sooo pissed off. Now what do I do? I was all ready for my Server exam and now I'll have to put it off till I can find another VUE centre - hopefully one a bit closer and less likely to fuck up their business and go into receivership. Stupid c*nts. Sorry for the language, but I was so fucked off by the way I've been treated. I just hope my dad can get all his money back now. We can't let them get away with it.

Hopefully I will have calmed down a bit by tomorrow!

Another Day

Tomorrow is my Server exam, I hope I've done enough revision for it *sigh* I'm quite worried about it actually. Everyone keeps telling me I'm gonna do fine, so I probably will manage to scrape through somehow LOL.

Hmm, not really much more to say today, maybe I'll have something else to add tomorrow.

Now... it's bedtime

London

Spent the day in London today, fixing some trivial problems - here's an example: Word XP opens one window per document, making the taskbar untidy... so I turned that option off. Woo (!) What a totally exciting day. I went up from Gatwick Airport with my dad who was spending the whole day there too - which is nice as he paid for the ticket (a return at that!!) - FIRST CLASS!!

He's staying in a hotel overnight as he's gonna be up in London again tomorrow and he's worked out that it'll be a lot cheaper to stay there instead of having to come all the way down, then go back again in the morning. Makes sense really.

MP3s

You know what really gets my goat? Badly named MP3s... but what's worse than that are badly tagged ones too. Especially those without any tags whatsoever. At least with some tags it can help you work out what song it should really be called.

I am very picky about the naming and tagging convention I use for my MP3 collection.

1. All MP3s should be named Artist - Title.mp3
2. The exception to that rule is when the song is part of an album then the track number comes before Artist.
3. Any remixes should be denoted within [square brackets]
4. Titles containing brackets will use parentheses ().
5. All words should start with a Capital Letter, except "feat." and "vs".
6. The MP3 should contain ONLY ID3v1 tags, v2 and Lyrics3 tags are not wanted at all.

It can be very hard to sort out a lot of MP3s if you haven't done it in a while, which is why I have been looking for some good tagging tools.

So far the best one I have used is called Tag&Rename. Unfortunately it isn't free - but it's probably worth a look. The other bad point I have found is that it doesn't support "wiping" of tags, i.e. complete removal of the ones you don't want and in my case that's ID3v2 and Lyrics3.

I have found a freeware program that should do the wiping of tags for me, but I haven't yet tested it - so I won't be posting any link here until I do.

Yay! It's Sunday again, and that means at 10PM tonight on BBC2 is the best show currently on TV. 24 - Day Two. I love watching Jack's exploits every week, it's so captivating. It's so hard not to get involved and find it impossible to take your eyes off the screen for 50 minutes.

I have already seen tonight's episode as I watched it last week on BBC3, but I wasn't paying too much attention so I will be watching intently tonight. I dunno if I'll go and watch next week's tonight, guess I'll decide at the time.

MCP!!

I PASSED!!! I am now an official MCP in Windows 2000 Professional. WOOHOO!!!!

/me dances around in circles.

The exam was actually a lot harder than I thought it was going to be... I felt like I was guessing at almost every question, but somehow I managed to get enough right answers to pass. Phew! Maybe this calls for getting a little drunk tonight hehe.

Eek!

I've got my first Microsoft exam tomorrow - Windows 2000 Professional. I'm getting really nervous about it. There's so much to remember, and I've been finding it so hard to actually keep it all in my poor little brain... things keep falling out. I feel like Homer Simpson, everytime he learns something new... something old gets pushed out. I'll probably forget how to drive next week!

I'll be glad to get the first one under my belt... and it's the weekend too! WOOHOO!!!! I really could do with some good lay-ins. Having to get up at 6:45am every morning is killing me! I wish I lived close enough to work to be able to crawl out of bed at 8am, get ready and leave the house by half past - like when I'm at college. It's so great! 7am is just too early for me.

*sigh*

Bah!

Wish people would leave me alone when I'm trying to revise. Everytime I get into answering a few questions people start asking me to do stuff for them. ARGH!!! I wish I could just tell them to bog off, and let me get on with what I'm doing.

/me needs a private office with a lock on the door :P

Thought For The Day

This was posted on the bit-tech forums:

Scottish hate English. Okay with Welsh and Irish.
Irish hate English. Okay with Scottish and Welsh.
Welsh hate English. Okay with Irish and Scottish.
English... Hate the Welsh, the Irish, Scots, the French, the Belgians, the Germans, the Americans...

But then again....everyone hates the Americans.

Apparently this was a quote from Eddie Izzard (a fantastic comedian!). Very funny (and also pretty close to the mark!) :)

Windows 2000

Found out today from Malgosia that the email machine here at work is up the creek, after taking a look at it it appears that Windows 98 has finally give up the ghost on that box. So she gave me a slightly newer box to move all the files onto. Shame the new box had Windows 95b on it though. So I repartitioned the drive, and installed Windows 2000 instead.

Finally got through that install only to find out that instead of using the letter D: for the new partition (with Win2k on it) it's used E:! Most irritating, so I installed the old hard drive from the email machine, backed up the files I needed and wiped it. Then moved all the files from C: (which is still a working install of 95 and I'm not sure if anything is still required) onto the old drive and then set about reinstalling 2000 onto a completely clean drive and using only the one partition this time.

So now I should have a 10GB C: drive with 2000 on it, and a 1.6GB drive with a load of files from a Win95 installation - which won't boot as I've broken the boot files (but that's easily fixed :))

Fun, don't you think?

Getting It Right

I'm slowly working out how all the CSS and template code works, and also slowly getting this site looking how I want it to. Now it looks a bit me and a little less like the original. Thank you Em for your help in getting this design up and running. :)

Back To Work :(

*sigh* First day back at work for what feels like forever. Nothing's changed, we still have stupid problems popping up here and there that only I am able to solve - apparently. Some initiative might come in handy sometimes.

I fixed our SMS by unplugging the phone and plugging it back in again. Fixed a problem with someone's Excel spreadsheet by just standing there as she opened it and then fixed our scanner by just pressing the "Update Address List" button on the screen.

And people wonder why I'm bored at work. Oh well, only a few more boring hours.

First Entry

Wow, it's finally working. Setting up Movable Type on my webhost was trickier than I thought it would be but once I realised that I had to put the CGIs into the cgi-bin directory for them to get executed things started to go a lot smoother.

Thanks Lewis for the help getting this up and running, without your input I'd probably still be staring at a load of source code in my browser!
